“People Working Together For A Better Community”
Generations of Winona residents have been involved in the community’s annual pride and joy, the Winona Peach Festival, now celebrating 50 years.
The living legacy of Canada’s 100 th birthday in 1967 that helped modernize Canada is seen in over 2,000 federally funded cultural, sports and recreational projects from coast to coast. In the community of Winona, a street festival was organized to raise a few funds for local charities that has grown into one of Ontario’s most popular annual summer events.
The event was originally planned over four days to cover the peak fruit growing seasons; spring’s Blossom Festival, midsummer’s Strawberry Festival, the town’s Centennial Festival July 1 st and late summer’s Festival of Fruit. Then in 1977, the four separate day festivals were combined into one 3-day event held at Winona Park. The Winona Peach Festival was incorporated in 1982.
By 2003, the 3-day festival was being run by over 2,000 volunteers, with annual attendance of over 100,000 visitors, and was generating about $3,730,000 for the community. Since then, the festival has grown into one of Ontario’s most popular festivals.
Happily, much remains as it started out, such as the local service clubs, associations and churches that help at the midway and at food booths where delicious lunches are served with, of course, peach desserts! Peach pies, peach cobblers, peach delicacies of all types are available as are baskets brimming with fruits that grow in the area’s rich soils.
The Winona Peach Festival offers an authentic experience and fun for the whole family every year. There are performances all weekend on the Main Stage. The Midway is bustling. Arts and Crafts tents are pitched in a shady area. Companies with commercial booths offer brand name excitement. The antique car show is a perennial favourite and, true to the festival’s fundraising roots, Food Bank donations are welcomed.
This year is the festival’s 50 th Anniversary. The Peach Festival officially opens at 5 PM on Friday, August 25 th , runs through to 6 PM Sunday, August 27 th . Mark your calendar to visit for a peachy good time.
