See everyone at the Ancaster Fairgrounds! The popular Ancaster Fair is 167 years old, 17 years older then Canada itself! The annual agricultural and recreational fair has been a farm and social event since 1850, although the location has been moved four times during the town’s long history.
Originally a mill town, Ancaster was founded in 1793 as the oldest established European community. By 1823, Ancaster was Upper Canada’s largest industrial and commercial centre with a population of over 1,681. By 2002 when Ancaster was amalgamated into Hamilton, the population of this affluent community had climbed to approximately 30,000.
This year’s theme for the fair is “Canadian Grown” in celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday. Visitors can expect Mounties, maple leaves, Canadian cowgirls and good ol’ fashioned community fun IN a town that’s as Canadian as a town can get!
The mandate for the Ancaster fair is educational but in a fun way so visitors don’t even realize they’re being educated about where their food actually comes from and how it gets to the dinner table, knowledge about which modern families can be a bit hazy. But after seeing the Agricultural and Homecraft competitions and demonstrations as well as the poultry judging, livestock shows, horse shows, free demonstrations and more, visitors leave with a greater understanding of their dependence on a healthy agricultural sector.
Enjoying the tasty result of agriculture is part of the fair too like the Carlike Pie Eating Contest, and all the delicious food booths. See how skilled craftspeople fashion pine needle baskets and be wowed by modern quilting, beading and rug hooking.
The Fair is into music in a big way too, with a full line-up of over 15 bands and performers that will get the audience’s feet tapping as they listen or get up to try a little square dancing. There’s a talent competition and a beer tent too. Kids will find lots to entertain them all day with reptiles galore, juggling, dog shows, comedy shows and more, until it all ends for the day in a light show. As visitors walk out the gates, everyone will agree the Ancaster Fair is The Great Canadian Fair!
